The Story Of St. Dunstan

If you've seen our label, you might just be wondering, "What in the devil is going on here?" Well, inspired by the entrepreneur, Silas Putnam, who made hot-forged horse nails in our distillery building over one-hundred-fifty years ago, here's the story behind our label.

There once was a crafty metalsmith named Saint Dunstan, who was visited one evening by the Devil himself. The Devil asked Saint Dunstan to re-shoe his cloven hoof, but devious Dunstan instead nailed a horseshoe to the Devil's hoof, causing the Devil a hell of a lot of pain. As the story goes, the Devil pleaded with the saintly metalsmith, and Saint Dunstan agreed to remove the horseshoe if the devil promised to never again enter a door with a horseshoe above it. This tale is claimed to be the origin of the "lucky horseshoe". Today, a horseshoe made by Silas Putnam graces the top of the front doors of our distillery.

Now, while the story goes that Saint Dunstan kept the Devil out, we will always wonder if instead he actually invited the Devil in for a sinful sip of Scorpion Pepper whiskey. We'll let you be the judge. Maybe you'll become a St. DunSTAN yourself.
